A Wound on a Tree, Millions of Years of Memory

The story

ಮರದ ಒಂದು ಗಾಯ. ಒಂದು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ. ಮತ್ತು ಲಕ್ಶಾಂತರ ವರುಶದ ಕತೆ. ಕಲ್ಲು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಮೂಳೆ ಉಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಭೂಮಿಯ ಬಹುಭಾಗದ ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಜೀವಿಗಳದ್ದು. ಅವು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಪಳೆಯುಳಿಕೆ ಆಗುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಅದರಲ್ಲೇ ಅಂಬರು ವಿಶೇಷ. ಅದು ನಮಗೆ ಬೂತಕಾಲದ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ನಮಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕದ್ದು ಹೋದ ವಾರದದ್ದು ಇರಬಹುದು. ಆದರೆ ಇದೇ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಲಕ್ಶಾಂತರ ವರುಶಗಳಿಂದ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಅಪಗಾತದಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಕಾಲದ ನೆನಪು. A wound on a tree. A small misstep. A story that can last millions of years. Rock preserves bones of the large. But most of Earth’s history belongs to the small. And small creatures rarely fossilise. That is why amber is extraordinary. It lets us glimpse entire insect worlds that would otherwise disappear. Mine may be only a week old. But the same process has been happening for millions of years.
